My Volvo Ocean Experience
The Volvo Ocean Race Learning Journey, which we attended on Tuesday, 30 Jan 2018, was a great experience for me. It was the first time Hong Kong has hosted the Race, and it was held at Kai Tak Runway Park. From the activities, I came to know more about boats and sailing, while learning about Science at the same time. We went around the Runway Park to identify materials and their properties. Specifically, we were looking for structures that were waterproof, rigid, flexible, transparent or that could float or sink.
The most amazing part of the experience was the time we spent, in the theatre, which is also known as The Globe, watching videos on the competition itself, the sailors’ life onboard, and team spirit. My favourite video was about the growing problem of plastic pollution in the ocean.
In addition, we learnt more about the Race itself, the importance of teamwork and the challenges faced by the sailors. During the conversation with the sailor who shared that he had missed his own bed at home during the Race, it taught me how to be more appreciative of what I have and not to take things for granted. We had lots of fun asking them questions.

What did we think about the Volvo Ocean Race Learning Journey?
I found the Volvo Ocean Race Learning Journey a fantastic experience filled with fun and learning. We got to meet the teams who were in the race, we got to climb into the boat and even take part in some of the activities the sailors must complete when in the race. It was extremely interesting to see the competition route around the world and ask questions to some of the team members about their life on the boat.
My favourite part of the trip had to be the “Challenge Yourself” area, where we got to try the Arm Crank Challenge. By rotating the equipment as fast as we could, we tried to generate energy for a household.

It was a really cold day but we were all very excited to explore the Volvo Ocean Race area!
Guides were informative and shared a lot of interesting facts!
Thank you for the good learning experience, Volvo!

Our P4 kids were fortunate!!!
It was the first time Hong Kong became a stopover for this Volvo Ocean Race and the Festival lasted for 15 days in our city for the first time.
I’m delighted that I could be there to witness Hong Kong launch this educational programme for the general public and schools too. Kids loved these interactive experiences on a full-sized boat and they were able to act as pilots testing out the steering wheels. If it were not the organiser and our teachers’ efforts, our kids would have had no chance to explore such an event.
Salute SISHK!
