Thank You, Mr Pek – Farewell Assembly by SISHK
by Ms Eleanor Lam
On Wednesday, 13 December 2017, SISHK showed their appreciation for Mr Pek Wee Haur’s leadership over the past five years in a memorable and moving assembly. Students and teachers had been working tirelessly for weeks to prepare an unforgettable assembly that showcased fantastic performances in singing, dance and drama. Looking back at Mr Pek’s years at SISHK, reminded us that change is the only constant in life and that we have to learn to embrace changes positively.
Four of our confident students, led by our school Head Prefect, Gavin Wong, and Vice-head Prefect, Hugo Healy, were the masters of ceremony for the assembly, and they did a wonderful job of introducing the various performances and speeches. Our vice-principal, Mr Bernard Ng, was also invited up the stage to share about Mr Pek’s visionary leadership, which helped SISHK grow into the successful school we know today. It was clear that Mr Pek always put the students’ interests first. He updated many school sports facilities to improve the students’ learning experience, and built new PY classrooms to expand the school further.
Students from different levels came up with rousing performances that impressed the audience. The teachers and students also prepared a video montage of their favourite moments with Mr Pek and showed their appreciation, admiration of his kindness and guidance for his dedication to the school community. Handmade postcards with student artwork and teachers’ well wishes were presented to Mr Pek on a USB for him to take back to Singapore. It is without a doubt that these heartfelt messages will be cherished and remembered by Mr Pek as he moves on to a new chapter in his life.
Mr Pek gave his final address as the principal of SISHK and reminded us to show compassion towards others, empathise with the less fortunate and to always retain a love for learning. Before the assembly ended, the primary 6 students gave a touching rendition of a farewell song and the entire school stood in solidarity to sing the school song one last time with Mr Pek. Joined by our new principal, Mr Kelvin Tay, it was a bittersweet moment signifying moving on from the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. The song lyrics had particular significance on that day and resonated with both the students and teachers alike, as we sang with passion and enthusiasm for Mr Pek’s final farewell. We are thankful of the memories we have shared and wish him every success in Singapore.
