An Account of Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day
This year, Singapore International School (Hong Kong) participated in the first ever “Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day” campaign organised in Hong Kong to fundraise for children in need all over the world.
With the help of two dedicated secondary students liaising with Save the Children Hong Kong’s youth ambassador, a campaign within school was ignited. Lam Sze Tung and Yen Huey Davina Yeo are members of the Secondary School’s Community Council and after much preparation, gave a thought-provoking assembly to the PY and Primary School which left all students wanting to make a change. The Secondary 2 students then went on to create a broadcast which was shown across the Secondary School. Whilst students began to digest the important messages given, preparations began for the day itself.
On Friday, 15 December 2017, the Christmas spirit took over SISHK. Students and teachers across the PY, Primary and Secondary Schools pulled on their Christmas themed jumpers, hats and accessories all in the name of charity. Christmas Jumper Day was a huge success and together, SISHK managed to raise a total sum of $81,360.50! This was the most amount raised by all participating schools in Hong Kong! The generous donations collected will be used by Save the Children in two ways: one half will be put into the emergency fund to help give children in emergencies the support they need, when they need it the most; the other half will help Save the Children and its partners to set up a system for reporting and protecting children from inappropriate content online.
A huge thank you to EVERYONE who helped to promote the campaign, got involved, and, lastly, to all the parents who encouraged their children to take part and donated. Without you, we could not have made such a difference to children’s lives all over the world. THANK YOU!
