Battle of the Books – Secondary
There’s been a lot of ‘firsts’ for the English Department and our students this year, including our very first Secondary Battle of the Books CCA competition team! On Friday 5th May they entered Hong Kong’s 24th Anniversary Battle of the Books tournament. Our students triumphed through nerves and placed third in the semi-final competition. A huge congratulations to our Secondary 3 Captains and Lower Secondary participants. We look forward to establishing our presence in future competitions and growing our BOB CCA.

In addition to this success, earlier on in the year we were fortunate to host Singaporean author Weng Wai Chan, whose novel ‘Lizard’s Tale’ featured on this year’s Battle of the Books booklist. She gave our students an inspiring talk and read an excerpt from an unfinished novel she is currently working on—what a privilege!
English Debate Team – Secondary
What started out as an interest group, our English SISHK Debate Team has gone from strength to strength this year developing debating skills and making their debut on the competition circuit in Hong Kong.
We finished off the debate season by hosting the Grand Finals round (for International Schools) of the UNESCO United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Debate on Friday 19th May.
The motion was ‘A.I. will improve students’ education’, and our SISHK debate team achieved First Place as side Opposition. Congratulations to Renee Lee, Charlotte Lee Wai Ying, and Sun Chufeng who competed as Juniors in the Senior Division! A special mention to Sun Chufeng for achieving Best Speaker and to Teacher-in-Charge, Gloria Chong, for her continued mentoring of the team. Thank you to two very special guests from Hong Kong’s top legal circles for serving as adjudicators, Mr. Wesley Wong, Senior Counsel, and Ms Jenny Lim. UNESCO Hong Kong Association board member and Vice President, Dr. Angela Cheung, MBE, JP, presided over the debate and gave inspiring closing remarks.
