VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) for Hong Kong Tech Challenge Game
The VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) for Hong Kong Tech Challenge Game is an esteemed national-level event that attracts talented secondary school students from all over Hong Kong. This is an annual event in the local STEAM community which is organised by the Asian Robotics League Fund and implemented by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC). Students from our Robotics CCA participated for the first time in this competition which was held on 27th January (Saturday) at the Hong Kong Science Park. The theme of this year’s competition was ‘VRC- Over Under’ with 25 participating schools.
We had two teams representing our school, the SISHKRedBots and SISHKBlueBots, and both managed to qualify for the second round which was a great achievement given our first attempt at the competition. Though the teams did not make it to the 3rd round their journey was filled with valuable experiences. The students dedicated themselves to intensive practice sessions, utilising every available moment to improve their strategies, fine-tune their programming and driving skills.
The teams recognise the immense growth that occurred through their participation. They gained firsthand experience in managing time effectively, overcoming resource constraints, and adapting to unforeseen circumstances. The experience heightened their understanding of the importance of planning, early preparation, effective time management, technical documentation and resource utilization. It also reinforced the significance of collaboration, adaptability, and perseverance in achieving success.
Our students demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and a positive attitude throughout the competition, learning from experienced teams from other schools. This experience has provided them with a solid foundation to build upon, inspiring them to strive for excellence in future robotics competitions.
Participating students testimonials:
The competition was large-scale and diverse, consisting of over 25 teams. When we won, we felt infinite triumph. When we lost, we were accepting of it, and were proud of ourselves no matter what, as we felt that defeat, orchestrated through unwavering effort, carried greater worth than victory borne of happenstance. From this cacophony of an experience, we learnt the vitality of communication and undying determination, as we had to adapt quickly and effectively in the face of unexpected hardships.
Kwok Hei Ting, Renee (S4-1) and Lam Cheuk Chi, Gigi (S1-4)
We faced many obstacles throughout the making of our robot as well as on the day of the competition, but in the end, although we didn’t win, the things we learnt were far more valuable.
Yin Hei Fong (S1-6)
Our team had a very enjoyable experience participating in the VEX Competition. We got to socialise and strategise with our different allies from other schools. We had to work together with the other schools, and tried our best to help each other and win the different rounds. We learnt a lot through working with our different allies, and were also inspired by many of the other schools’ advanced robots.
