Head of Zubir Said House Megan Chan

Megan Chen (Zubir HoH)

Megan Chen DP1A

My leadership journey in school started when I was a timid S1 girl. I decided to run for the Community Council and I had to give a speech in front of the whole grade. I remember freezing up on stage and completely messing up my speech, but I also remember my house leader coming up to me and encouraging me. My house leader gave me hope and made me feel supported. I never want to forget that feeling I had. I wanted to be the person that made others feel hopeful and supported.

Since I was in S1, I have admired my seniors for impacting the school and I have slowly grown to love my house, Zubir Said. My house is so unique. The energy and the enthusiasm my juniors have for house events inspire me. I want to be part of their lives, be a role model for them and help them in their journey in SISHK, so I decided to run for Head of House. I was not confident that I would get chosen for this position and I feel extremely thankful and privileged to have been given the opportunity by the school to be a house leader.

My mission as a leader is to foster a sense of belonging by making sure everyone feels loved and supported. I need to motivate the house by increasing participating and being dedicated when organising house events. I know, sometimes, as a leader, I need to make decisions with the best interest of the house in mind even though that decision may be unpopular.

This year, I would like to introduce two things that will help me become a better leader and make house meetings more enjoyable. The first is getting feedback from the members of my house.  By understanding what they want, I can improve on the things I am doing and make house meetings more enjoyable for them. Secondly, I want to publicly acknowledge the contributions of the members of my house via house stickers and thanking them in house meetings.

A person that I admire is definitely Ellen DeGeneres. Ellen has inspired me to be kind and compassionate. She is courageous, generous and thoughtful and she always goes above and beyond what is expected of her. Ellen has impacted and given hope to millions of people. I hope I can emulate the characteristics she has to become a better leader.
