Roots and Shoots’ Bake Sale
by Ms Cindy Aoki
The Roots and Shoots CCA raised HK$2,938 for the Society for Community Organization(SoCO). Ms Esther Wu, a social worker, and a community organizer from SoCO visited our club and showed the students the conditions of some Hong Kong residents who live in cubicles, caged homes or sub-divided flats.
All members of the CCA participated in a Bake Sale and the proceeds went to help pay for fans for the families who are living in these cubicles and caged homes. Did you know that there are 210 000 families living in sub-divided flats? These flats are only 5.3 square meters in total livable area with a toilet and kitchen inside. Caged homes and coffin cubicles can fit only a 3×5 feet bed.
There was a news article last month when the temperature inside a sub-divided flat was recorded at 38 degrees Celsius. We hope that the money raised will help the living conditions of some individuals and make a difference for them.
