Volleyball U16 Girls Reflection

Volleyball U16G

Lee Yu Qiao S4S

Throughout the season, we have had the privilege of watching and supporting the growth of the U16G Volleyball Team. We started off as a hodgepodge of talents and experience: a jumble of patchwork hastily pasted together. During training, we fumbled as we tried to dodge one another’s footsteps, crashing and colliding onto the floor.

It was the basics that were the most important, and the basics that were the hardest to learn.

“Be confident in yourself, then you can perform well,”

“Be patient, wait for the right opportunity,”

“In a team sport, trust your teammates as you would trust yourself.”

Confidence, patience, and trust: all priceless lessons our coach imparted to us. We believe that we have had the opportunity to experience the gritty road of growth as we failed and failed and, ultimately, succeeded. Every single one of our members persevered and practised until our muscles ached and burned (the groans at the end of each session were a sure sign.) This determination to advance and improve is what puts us apart from the rest, and what will continue to push us ahead in the future.

“Put in hard work and reap the results, or lack the passion and waste your time”

This invaluable lesson was gleaned right after the holidays: many of us willingly exchanged our breaks to practise, not because of the fear of punishment, but of the genuine desire to better ourselves. Together, we had the privilege of experiencing the joy when playing and laughing and crying together with our team, a mixture of personalities but altogether one body.

The unsure and shy voices turned into loud shouts and cheers of encouragement. More important than the physical skills we gleaned, it is the determination and passion for volleyball that has pushed us to grow far more than we have ever hope to achieve alone.

Our takeaway from this year was more than just it a medal; we believe that every single member of our team came out of the season a better person.

As the captain and vice-captain of the U16 Girls Volleyball Team for 2018, we thank you for the unforgettable memories created as one, and as a whole.
