U16 Boys Basketball Journey
Sam Tung S3S
AY2018/19 has been a season where we learnt a lot from the victories and defeats. As the vice-captain of the U16 basketball team, I learnt that leadership skills are crucial to a team. A team without a leader will have no direction. In basketball, a team functions like the human body, where the leader is the brain which provides directions to the body to function properly. As an inexperienced leader, this was a lesson that I have learnt from our captain Tyrus. In the past year, I have gained more game experience, learnt to identify the flaws through video clips of our games, and took advice from the coach and the captain.
Zig Ziglar’s point that “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude” resonates strongly with me. Before every game and training, we are reminded by Mr. Lian, our supervising teacher, to have the correct mindset. Having the correct mindset means that we stay focused and never give up no matter how tough the training is or how many points we are losing in the game. This is needful during our training as we have to make full use of the limited training time every week. In games, it brings out the best in us when we are focused and ‘locked in’ in games.
We learnt to treat every game seriously and our efforts paid off as we earned a ISSFHK bronze medal this year. We have seen huge improvements in many players and have learned much from our mistakes. We will work harder to achieve better results and we look forward to the next season.
