AY1718 Photography CCA
By Danny Choi(S1R) and Hanshu Yang(S2S)
This has been the debut year of the Photography CCA in the Secondary section, and it has been another exciting year.
We have learnt a lot of skills from this CCA, such as how to take good photographs, as we were assigned to take photos according to different themes to increase our awareness of different perspectives of photography around us. The teachersin-charge also encouraged us to share our photos with our CCA members, and we shared the skills we applied to help others take better photographs through peer assessing. As a result, we have been able to collaborate and develop our own website (https://sishkphotographycca.weebly.com/) for publicising our work to the school.
Throughout our time together, we have faced many challenges, such as struggling to develop a photographer’s eye; we achieved this by discovering different perspectives of looking at the world around us, and sharpening our own skills, and developing a repertoire of skills in photography, which allowed us to become better photographers. We also learnt many formal skills concerned with photography that are transferable to other artistic disciplines. These involved putting the subject of attention in different positions of the frame, which helped with the composition of the piece and also improved the photo, such as using the rule of thirds to help with positioning. We were lucky enough to be able to participate in a Photography Walk around Central; the trip helped us discover unique locations in Hong Kong and picturesque views from urban street art to cityscape skyscrapers.
Overall, the Photography CCA has been an eye-opening experience for anyone who is willing to explore depths in photo taking skills and has been a great opportunity to communicate our own work to others. We have improved in our photo-taking skills as well as learning leadership skills. We have also certainly improved our photo-taking skills by using different perspectives to look at things and positioning a subject in the picture at different angles, by using the rule of thirds.
The Photography CCA is proud to announce new activities and projects going forward in the next academic year. From buying new equipment (such as drones), to reaching out to other schools in the district, to visiting photography exhibitions and galleries, as well as hosting more trips around HK both for aesthetic development and formal development, such as a possible visit to an actual dark room used for developing photographs!), and many other things to look forward to, we would like to see you next year! Do not worry if you are inexperienced in taking photographs – as long as you have an interest in photography, you are most welcome to join, as the teachers-in-charge will help you hone your photo-taking skills along the way.
