Celebrating the joy of reading at SISHK Library Week
SISHK celebrated our annual Library Week from 21 to 25 February 2022. Reading used to mean sitting down with a book at home or in the library. Today it would mean using an online device to communicate during the pandemic without a physical boundary. The Library Week was marked by online talks from visiting authors in both English and Chinese, book sharing sessions by students, the exciting Character Dress Up Day and Heifer’s Read to Feed reading incentive programme.
Poetry is a form of self-expression that inspires children’s creativity. We invited Chinese author Ms Wei Ya to share her children’s poems. Mr Gavin Coates was the other author who joined us this year. Gavin studied Landscape Architecture in the U.K. and was invited to read his environmental stories to our students. His talks explained how important our planet was and what we could do together to make a better world. Giving students the opportunity to interact with authors can help develop a passion not only for reading but their interest in exploring new topics. Our students were highly engaged and asked the authors many questions during the talks.
To encourage a love for reading, we had the beloved Character Dress Up Day where the students dressed as their favourite characters from the books they enjoy to read. We strive to educate students on the importance of recycling and reducing waste. In this occasion, our students were encouraged to use different recycled materials from home to create their costumes. Although we could not meet in the school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we still stayed connected and received many photographs from parents of their child in costume.
