AY1718 Swimming CCA
by Tai Ethan (S1M) and Sng Yan Megan (S1M)
As members of the Swimming CCA, we spend time in the water practising on specific swimming techniques to improve our strength. We also do land training to build up our physique. But most importantly, we help each other develop great team spirit and valuable bonding as a team. All of these together can be challenging but also fruitful. Here we share more about what it is like to be part of this CCA.
Our School Team and Training
Our coach is the talented Alex, a Malaysian Olympian. Coach Alex was particularly strong at backstroke and good at kicking, and his legs propelled him to win a number of swimming awards. Coach Alex always corrects our stroke techniques and gives us specific feedback on how to swim faster. All these are vital to achieving better efficiency in our swim.
SISHK has two competitive swim teams, one in the Primary and another in the Secondary. To be committed, we have to attend training sessions regularly every week to practise, sharpen our skills and build team spirit. Of course, the intense training also helps us to build strength to swim faster.
Competitions
To testify our strength, we go for inter-school competitions nearly every two months which are mostly held at different international schools, our own pool or Victoria Park Swimming Pool. These are major competitions – the Hong Kong School Sports Federation (HKSSF) and the International School Sports Federation Hong Kong (ISSFHK). The competitions are an excellent chance for us to compete against others, and are always the best time to test and showcase our swimming talents. When we go on competitions, there are also other things to pick up, like experiencing team protocols and being exposed to challenging racing conditions.
Words cannot describe the excitement and satisfaction when representing SISHK at different swim events – the roaring cheers for our team members’ splashes with every competing moment, along every inch of the water. After each competition, what we gain and treasure is the experience, sportsmanship and teamwork for supporting one another, and we will continue doing so in the next academic year.
