U14 Boys Basketball CCA AY1718
by Sam Tung (S2S)
As Captain of the U14 Boys Basketball Team, I have witnessed our team go through ups and downs this season, and it has felt like a roller coaster ride at many points along the journey. We experienced victory, but we also faced defeats. However, the most important part of the journey was learning from the mistakes that we had made in order to improve and grow as basketball players.
Over the course of the season, one thing which stood out and continued to be strong over the year was our defense as it led to most of our success. We managed to hold most of the teams in the league to 30 points or less, while holding the #1 league in the team to their lowest point total of the season. Our tactic was the zone defense, and it was effective because it stops opponents from getting into the paint and forces them to take long range shots.
In regards to improvement, we still need the most work on offense. Most of our players lacked experience knowing how to beat a zone defense and we struggled to run effective plays to beat the zone over the course of the year. However, we did manage to improve and look forward to being more effective next academic year at both the U14 and U16 levels.
Furthermore, every one of our players brought positive contributions to the team. This was not just in terms of points and plays, but in things like coaching others for improvement, encouragement, or the reduction of our mistakes in games.
Even though the season did not go the way we wanted to in terms of our record, the journey was one that was still valuable and one in which we had learnt a lot from. The whole season was about learning, and it’s clear we have learnt from our mistakes and will continue to work hard and improve on it in subsequent years. We look forward to the next season!
