U14 Girls Basketball Team AY1718
by Annika Lee (S2S)
A campaign with highs and lows…it all starts at pre-season; this is a time where we can meet as a team before the regular season begins. As Captain of the U14G Basketball Team, I have witnessed that it’s brought us closer together as a team. We had rigorous training every week which helped us build our determination and teamwork. Pre-season helped us all gain a better base level of fitness as well as refine some core skills.
During the training sessions with our coach, Mr Jon Webber, we prepared some game strategies and focused on some more advanced skills. Our first match was a tough game and we had to learn a lot more quickly, back to training and refocus our efforts. Organisation of defense and attack helped the team clarify roles and responsibilities further which led us to our victories.
Throughout the season, our team improved on both ends of the court. For example, we practised different zone structures for defense, and for offense we practised on speed passing and driving to the hoop for layups.
When we knew we missed out on the playoffs by one point, we were a bit disappointed in ourselves, especially the members who joined last year as we didn’t manage to make it into the playoffs again. Despite that, we were optimistic and looked forward to our post-season training where we can continue to develop and improve personally and as a team.
The whole season was very memorable, as each game taught us different skills and tactics that we implemented into our game. The most intense yet fun game was the last match as it decided which school would get into the playoffs. Although we were up against a reputable team, it motivated us to push ourselves to our limit and fight for the last spot.
Overall, the whole experience was enjoyable, especially training and getting to know my team mates. I would like to thank our coach, Mr Webber, my awesome team and students who supported us throughout the season. Let’s go Lions!
