Expanding Our Horizons Through Technology
“The main reason why I like using Chromebook is because I have so much to find out about computers and the world! “
By Julien Joshua Tan, P4D
Like Julien, many students feel that their motivation to learn has improved due to the increased possibilities of activities available since the introduction of the Chromebook one to one initiatives for P4 and P6 levels. Students of these two levels each have in-class access to a Chromebook. Gone are the days of heavy carting of mobile carts for the two levels. Now more time is available for students to acquire computing and internet navigation skills on a regular basis during school hours. Although the learning culture in our classrooms is well established, incorporating more technology into our teaching and learning routines has provided our students with another platform, which is more responsible and independent. Cheryl Long, another student adds, ‘I feel more responsible when I am in charge of my own Chromebook.’ Students are beginning to exercise a higher degree of self-control while practicing internet usage conduct in a supportive and guided environment. However, the most encouraging development of all is the ‘let me show you…’ phrase often spoken between students when someone offers to help another when they are ‘stuck’; over time, social relationships between students can also be strengthened as well. With the additional benefit of direct access to Google Suite (G-Suite), students and their teachers can interact more easily outside class time, especially for catching up on missed lessons and learning enrichment opportunities.

On Wednesday, 27 September 2017 we held an ICT Workshop for Primary Parents. Topics covered included cyber wellness, setting up parental controls at home and Chromebook usage in school in conjunction with how Google Classroom and G-Suite are being utilized.
With a reasonable turnout of parents who were very engaged and who asked pertinent questions regarding how to use screen time effectively, monitor students’ computer usage and ensure their keen interest in the new Chromebook initiative, the workshop continued way past its initial allocated time slot. However, I think both parents and teachers involved felt this was necessary as many scenarios and solutions could be discussed and problem-solved.
The workshop was definitely a success and a request for further workshops was put forward. Thank you to those parents who came and engaged with us.
