S1-S4 Leadership Training
by Shi Xin Ying Kaitlyn (S4M)
The S1-S4 Leadership Training took place on the 3 – 4 October, 2017. It involved all the newly appointed student leaders from the AC, CC, SC, AV as well as the House representatives. This was facilitated by LAC representatives and supervising teachers.
The aim of the training was to introduce and create a bond between the student leaders in their respective councils/groups and have them strengthen their bond as a team by working together to overcome difficulties when completing tasks as well as preparing for their culminating event at the end of training.
Tasks were created with specific focuses, which included the student leadership attributes: commitment, risk-taking, balance, principled and caring. Additionally, the tasks had modifications to increase the difficulty, and reflections/self-evaluations were carried out to build upon one’s understanding and learning. This allowed the students to understand themselves better by understanding how they, as individuals, react in stressful or challenging situations.
The outcome was successful as each student got to familiarise oneself with their leadership abilities. This was mainly what leadership style (in reference to the Goleman’s leadership styles) they were, as well as what tier of leadership they currently were demonstrating so they could better understand which aspects of leadership they would like to develop over the course of the year. Furthermore, student leaders were also able to get to know the other members in the council/group that they will work with for the rest of the academic year.
