Head of Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) House Lorraine Jiang
Lorraine Jiang DP1A
I became a member of the LKY house when I joined SISHK in Secondary 2. I still vividly remember the very first house meeting; I sat with my classmates and listened to our house leaders share about the inter-house events and activities. Every house meeting in the past 4 years was filled with a lot of laughter and enjoyments.
My journey in SISHK changed me as it made me a better person. When I first came to SISHK, I was shy, quiet, and not brave enough to apply for any of the leadership roles. I watched how my friends had done their jobs as a member of the SC, AC, CC, and house representatives. I learned from my friends and the teachers that being a leader requires bravery, commitment, and the ability to organize events and to think about things ahead of any other members. I realized that I was not yet ready to become a student leader and I gave the chance to other people who were more capable and more suitable for the leadership role. However, I always wanted to help others and contribute to the school community. The four years in SISHK taught me not only how to learn, but to give love and care, to respect, to explore, to challenge ourselves. That is why I chose to apply for the Head of LKY house.
It is never easy to be the head of any leadership group. I never thought that preparing for house meetings, getting people to involve in activities and organizing events would be this tiring, but, fulfilling. The seniors gave us a lot of help in terms of leading the house and communicating with other house representatives. Whenever we overcome problems as a team, I couldn’t be more proud of our community. The point is not to win the competition nor the game, it is what you learn from the process of participating in the activity. Being the head of LKY house for about one month has taught me how to manage my academics and leadership roles. I know that after this academic year, I would learn a lot more from our community.
When I applied for the head of LKY house, I said I wanted to know every member in our house and be friends with them. I believe that there is always something that you could learn from every person. I decided that I want to explore what each of them is good at and help them to shine in the next year. As I mentioned before, participation is always more important than the result.
I am incredibly honored that the students and teachers elected me as the head of LKY house in AY1819. I will do my best in leading our house and I am certain that with the help of other house representatives and Head of Houses, we can grow our school community into a nurturing, caring and supportive family.
